3D Unreal Engine Environment

This project marked the beginning of my journey into game design during my college studies, sparking my passion and interest in crafting 3D models and exploring the possibilities inherent in industry-standard programs. The main goal was to construct a convincingly realistic environment, and I believe my first attempt into modelling and environmental creation delivered great results.

When I first started this project, my 3D modelling knowledge was limited to SketchUp, a tool I had previously used in high school construction projects. Additionally, my digital creative skills were confined to Adobe Photoshop, where I edited files and created custom images. These Photoshop skills proved invaluable when designing the menu screens for my environment.

The project made me learn a range of skills in Maya and its diverse tools such as bridge, extrude, duplicate, mirror, faces, and edges. Through this experience, I also grasped the ins and outs of applying textures in both UDK and Maya, refining my ability to edit UV maps and enhance texture realism. I sourced some textures online, including trees, barrels, and houses, which not only contributed to realism but also filled empty spaces, bringing the overall environment together.

The project taught me valuable lessons on Maya modelling, Unreal usage, basic node-based programming, lighting setup, rendering, and simple UV mapping. Reflecting on my first attempt of working with industry-standard game development software, I can say that I am pleased with the project's outcome, which not only helped me show my creative abilities but also provided insights into what people’s work in industry is like.

Video Showcase

I created this showcase video to highlight both the immersive environment and the fundamental yet innovative node-based programming at play.

I am happy with the outcome considering it was the first time when I used this creative software. My familiarity was primarily rooted in a brief session with SketchUp during high school, making this venture a significant leap into uncharted territory.

Looking back, I recognize the potential for improvement. It would have been a more effective strategy if I had constructed a concise one-minute compilation by seamlessly editing together brief clips. Such an approach would have allowed me to show the key facets of my game, encompassing elements like the menu, focal point (the mosque), engaging enemy interactions, captivating pickup effects, diverse locations within the environment, varying levels, and the conclusive victory and loss screens.
